CIF Results and Sports Update

BOYS WATER POLO On Wednesday afternoon, Irvine Water Polo was defeated by the #1 ranked team in the nation, Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, 23-2.  As Ray jokingly shared with me yesterday morning, “We scored the first goal and the final goal of the game!”.    Congratulations to Irvine Water Polo for earning a CIF victory vs Millikan HS on Tuesday.  It was the first CIF win for the IHS Water polo program since 2002.   And even though Wednesdays win was not as successful, it is an honor to get the opportunity to compete against the best in the nation.  Congratulations Coach Wong and Boys’ Water Polo for a great 2014 season!
IRVINE FOOTBALL vs Villa Park tonight (7 PM) in Round I of the CIF Southwest Division at Fred Kelly Stadium/El Modena HS.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY   ALEX STERRITT competes tomorrow at CIF Prelims / Mt Sac College (11:30 AM – Division 3 / Heat 3)

Irvine earns first CIF win since 2001

Irvine boys water polo goalie Preston Fox credited the passionate halftime message from Coach Ray Wong. Both coaches focused on the counterattack. But either way, Irvine found a way to rally Tuesday night for a rare playoff victory.
The Vaqueros scored three counterattack goals in the third period and shut out visiting Long Beach Millikan in the second half en route to a 9-4 victory in a CIF-SS Division 1 wild-card playoff match at the Woollett pool in Irvine.
It was Irvine’s first CIF triumph ince 2001 and second in program history.

Travis Gellerman (four goals), Micah Kamai (three steals) andJacob Lee (two goals) scored on the counter in the third for Irvine (19-8), which trailed, 4-3, at halftime.
But the Vaqueros didn’t overcome an ordinary one-goal deficit. Long Beach Millikan’s Andrew Ingram scored on a mid-pool shot at the buzzer to give the Rams (15-10) their first lead.
But Irvine recovered and grabbed the momentum for good in the first five minutes of the third to advance to Wednesday’s first-round match at top-seeded Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (25-0).
“Coach Ray definitely got us pumped (at halftime),” said Fox, who made 12 saves, including a redeeming penalty block in the fourth.
Wong said he wanted to push the counterattack in the second half and inserted two of his fastest players: Oscar Nomura and Lee.
Lee scored 54 seconds into the third on a counterattack and a wide-open Gellerman added another counter strike on a pass by Nomura a minute later to give the Vaqueros the lead for good, 5-4.
“They’re a fast team,” Millikan coach Danely Smith said of Irvine.
Millikan went 1 for 9 on the man-advantage; Irvine 2 for 6.

National Signing Day!

IHS Athletics will be hosting a short signing ceremony to celebrate Irvine athletes who are signing their National Letter to Intent to play sports at the collegiate level.  November 12th is the first day that any athlete in the nation can officially accept an offer to compete for a college or university.  Less than 10 percent of high school varsity athletes will play college level sports, and even fewer athletes are given offers that allow them the opportunity to commit to a college or university on the first day.
Please join us for the ceremony in front of the
Practice Gym @ approximately 11:35am on Wednesday, November 12th.
Athletes Signing:
Sarah Miles – University of West Alabama – Softball
Mikey Filia – University of California, Irvine – Baseball
