PCL LEAGUE TITLE & much more!!

GIRLS SWIM pulled off a major upset at the League Final Meet on Friday, capturing a Pacific Coast League Championship!!   Congratulations Coach Scott Hinman & Coach Crystal Hinman!!   CIF Prelims occur this Thursday at Riverside City College.

From Coach Scott Hinman:
The Irvine Vaquera Girls Swim Teams won the Pacific Coast League Championships at all 3 Levels last week despite being ranked third.
The top teams did not even consider that Irvine would be in the picture must less win it all. Irvine Girls performed well in Tuesday’s Preliminaries with nearly 100% of the swimmers, at all 3 levels, hitting their lifetime best performances. This put us in good positions for Friday’s Finals and Consolation Finals. Varsity relied on depth in every event as we placed 2nd in only 1 event with no individual wins. The points necessary to win came from all the girls who improved to where we finished in the middle of most events with all 4 entries. Most other teams could only qualify 2 or 3 per event into the finals as they have a more difficult time developing that “average” athlete.
Every girl in the program contributed in each of the levels.

Irvine won all 3 Divisions. “Open”, Junior Varsity and Varsity. A rare moment in swimming.

This Thursday we will compete in the CIF Division 1 Prelims at Riverside CC 9:00am with Finals being Saturday at 5:00pm. Division 1 is the fastest division in the country as shown last year when 7 National Records were set by a variety of schools. The same could occur again this year.
Very difficult qualifying times must be achieved just to get into the top 36 for entry.
Irvine Girls participating:

Julia Wright (9)-  200 Free & 500 Free, 200 Free Relay & 400 Free Relay
Kate Lee (9)– 200 IM & 100 Breast, Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay

Boys Volleyball

Congratulations to Coach Mednick and Coach Nguyen for their playoff victory yesterday afternoon versus Woodbridge.   With that win, Boys Volleyball will advance into the CIF Playoffs next Tuesday.   CIF will announce the pairings tomorrow at 2 PM on their website.

The following is from Coach Mednick about the game:

Yesterday, the boys volleyball team played against Woodbridge for a berth into the Division 1 CIF playoffs. This match was necessary because the teams were tied for third place after league play.
This match was a best five format, like all varsity matches. Your Vaqueros came out strong and won a tight first game 25-22. Game two Irvine generated a big lead, but the Warriors battled and made the coaching staff age another 10 years.
After winning game two by the same score as game one, the team got a little complacent. Woodbridge played very well and won game three, 22-25. The fourth game the Vaqueros showed their resiliency and stymied the Woodbridge offense with some fantastic defense. This led to a 25-21 victory and a CIF playoff berth.
The Vaqueros were led by senior captains Manar Totonji and Brandan Soltes. Manar had a team high 14 kills and 5 blocks. Brandan had 11 kills and 10 digs. Junior Scott Searl had 7 kills and 5 digs, Ryan Lee had 12 kills, Nelson Ho had 10 digs, and Sid Konkimalla had 7 kills.
Junior, setter Mitchell Mednick ran the Vaquero offense superbly. He had 52 assists along with 5 digs and 6 service aces.
The other team members are seniors Sean Choi, Ahmad Ibrahim, Justin Lee, Andrew Schmidt, Junior Kelvin Vo, Sophomores Simon Ho, and Matthew Wiher.
Next match will be on the road next Tuesday. Thank you for the faculty attendance by John Phillips, Scott Hinman, and Barbie Hinman.
Special thanks to assistant coach extraordinaire Noel Nguyen.

Congratulations Coach Mednick and Coach Nguyen for your academic program success, and good luck tonight vs Uni (Irvine Game Gym – 5:15 PM)!
