Winter Sports Updates

The following are highlights from our winter coaches regarding some of their preseason highlights.  Starting this week, all teams are now into their Pacific Coast League games and matches.
BOYS BASKETBALL  (from Coach Klamberg)
The Irvine Boys Basketball team are currently 8-9 overall, before entering into league play this Friday, January 9th vs. Corona del Mar at 7pm in the Irvine High Gym.
The team went 3-2 in their first tournament, winning the Bronze Division Championship of the Godinez HS Grizzly Invitational.
In their first two games, the Vaqueros battled, but fell to Huntington Beach and San Juan Hills. In the Bronze Division the Vaqueros defeated Century 50-33, Costa Mesa 52-50, and Santiago 38-30 . Senior DJ Kim led Irvine in scoring in the final three games scoring 14, 18, and 21 points respectively. Against Century, Seniors Nick Yu added 12 points (four 3-pointers) and Connor Tuttle added seven. Seniors Ahmad Ibrahim and Bryan Le contributed 12 and 11 points respectively in the Costa Mesa game.
In the Irvine World News, one of the most competitive tournaments in the county,  the Vaqueros won their opening round contest against Mission Viejo, 58-45.  Tuttle led the Vaqueros in scoring with 24 points, while Kim added 14. The team also defeated University 61-52. Kim led the way with 21, while Tuttle contributed 20 points in the win. Connor Tuttle was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Vaqueros also had wins against El Rancho (overtime 87-80) and Bolsa Grande (56-44) in the Katella Tournament and Hawthorne (69-50) in non-league play. Senior DJ Kim was named to the All-Tournament team of the Katella Tournament.
GIRLS BASKETBALL (from Coach Munsell)
Girls basketball has been learning their way with all the youth having to grow up quick. We’re currently 4-9, with 4 of those losses coming by a total of 10 points. We’ve been in a lot of close games and are figuring out how to close out those nail-biters. There has been a lot of progress and despite a stacked league, I feel there isn’t a team that we can’t beat if we come ready to play our best every night.
The girls begin Pacific Coast League play this Friday vs Corona del Mar at 5:30 PM in the Irvine High School Game Gym.
BOYS SOCCER  (from Coach Day)
Boys soccer is struggling to find their Identity.  One highlight moment of the preseason came when Brennan Ernst scored his first ever goal as a Varsity player, vs Whittier high school in our ITC tournament.   As a 9th Grader, Brennan has exceptional soccer skills. The goal was a header, and at 5' 4" , that made it a great Goal!
We boys begin Pacific Coast League play today @ Corona del Mar, 3:15 PM.
GIRLS SOCCER  (from Coach Rebeccah Phillips)
We have three wins so far.  We beat 2/3 teams in the Irvine Team Challenge, just missing the finals by 1 point. We beat Whittier 3-0 and Godinez 2-1.  The following week we played Tustin High and came out with a 3-1 victory.
We girls begin Pacific Coast League play today vs Corona del Mar in the Irvine Stadium at 5pm.
GIRLS WATERPOLO  (from Coach Hinman)
Girls Water Polo has started the season with the largest number of participants it has ever had at 47. Over 50% are first year players. This bodes well for two years from now but our lack of competitive experience has influenced our early season start. Varsity is currently 2 – 6 overall and 0 – 1 in league. We placed 4th in our El Nino Cup defeating Northwood and Ocean View while losing to Arroyo Grande in the semi -finals and Laguna Beach JV in the 3rd place game. We are entering our rookie crew in as many competitions as is allowed hoping to increase experience and improve an understanding of the game. Athletes are putting in a good effort and following the program so we are improving in one of our two pools. Improvement is showing in the swimming pool, however the gene pool remains the same.  Today the girls host PCL rival Corona del Mar @ Woollett Aquatics Center, 3:15 PM
