Boys Basketball!

BOYS BASKETBALL battled hard last night and put a lot of points on the board (62 pts!), but just could not keep up with the depth of the Gahr Gladiators (final score:  Irvine 62 – Gahr 96).    Gahr advances to the next round, and may very well win the whole bracket; they are a very good team.

Congratulations to Coach Kris Klamberg and the Varsity Basketball Team.  You represented Irvine High School and the Pacific Coast League with pride, sportsmanship, and competitive drive!

SPORTS UPDATE!

Hello Staff,
The winter sports season has nearly concluded, with Boys Basketball playing tonight in the CIF PLAYOFFS @ Gahr HS,  and Wrestling competing in the CIF INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Friday & Saturday @ Temecula Valley HS.  Here are some brief highlights of the winter sports season:

BOYS BASKETBALL  (from Coach Kris Klamberg)
The Irvine Boys Basketball Team finished the regular season 11-16 overall and 3-7 in league (
4th place). The Vaqueros battled in a very competitive league, defeating Beckman both times and Woodbridge at home. Five of their seven league losses were by 10 points or less. The Vaqueros season is not over yet as they have qualified for an at-large bid in Division 3AA CIF and will travel to face #2 Gahr High School tonight at 7pm.

Highlights of the Season include:
Winning the Bronze division Championship of the Godinez HS Tourney.
Defeating Mission Viejo in the first Round of the Irvine World News Tournament.
Playing Tustin (24-2, 10-0 in League) to a five point game in the Irvine World News Tourney
Defeating Woodbridge at Home

Team Members Include:
DJ Kim (SR)
Connor Tuttle (SR)
Bryan Le (SR)

GIRLS BASKETBALL  (from Coach Steve Munsell)
Girls basketball achieved what we had set out to do at the beginning of the season; improve in every aspect of the game. After losing 7 girls from last year’s team, we had the challenge of a team loaded with, and relying heavily on, freshmen & sophomores. The girls learned very quickly what it is to compete on the varsity stage.
Injuries & other issues provided some more unexpected hurdles and allowed us only 1 game all season with our full team in uniform. HOWEVER, the resolve and toughness the girls showed this season will prove immensely valuable in the coming years. While our record (5-21) may not have showed it, the girls were competitive in most of our early season games. 5 of our losses came by a total of 14 points. With the experience of this season and a full off-season to implement strategy, get healthy and develop their skills our future is looking very bright!

BOYS SOCCER  (from Coach Eugene Day)
If we had played as a whole team from the start, we could have made a dent in the win column.  In our very first PCL game, we were beat big by CDM.  But we nearly beat them in the 2
nd round of the PCL Schedule.  We lost many close games, and unfortunately, we were not able to finish for the win.

GIRLS SOCCER  (from Coach Rebeccah Phillips)
We ended our season strong, beating University 2-0. Sophomore JJ Riddle scored her first Varsity goal assistant by Senior Kristy Johnson. JJ Riddle also assisted Sophomore Alex Vanous for her 2nd goal of the season.

GIRLS WATER POLO (from Coach Scott Hinman)
Girls Water Polo ended a bit earlier than we wanted to. Our final game loss to University last Thursday dropped us from 3rd to 4th in league through a tie breaker method so there are no CIF playoffs for us this year. We were 10-19 on the season and 5-5 in league. Our final Division 1 ranking was 13th.

WRESTLING (from Coach John Phillips)
Irvine finished as PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE CHAMPIONS, qualifying the entire team from the league final tournament to the CIF INDIVIDUALS CHAMPIONSHIPS.  CIF (Inland Division) will occur this Friday & Saturday at Temecula Valley HS.
